What is appropriate? Who’s to say? If the Corsicana City Council adopts the Historic Downtown District Overlay Design Guidelines, the six appointed members of the city’s Landmark Commission will be making those decisions for property within the Main Street Project boundaries. Opponents and advocates have been meeting to discuss the proposed ordinance for several weeks, culminating in a town hall meeting, held Monday evening at the Corsicana Public Meeting. Mayor C. L. “Buster Brown” opened the town hall meeting with a call for passage of the new law. “It’s important that we put this (legislation) in place,” he said, citing communities such as Southlake and Granbury, who have created historic-looking downtowns and shopping areas, mimicking the look that Beaton Street has in Corsicana. Josh Lasserre, from the Texas Historical Commission, was on hand to promote the guidelines as well. “You are strengthening the character you already have,” he said, “creating a standard that elevates all.” |

Navarro County Commissioners met in regular session Monday morning at the Navarro County Courthouse to discuss a number of topics, including prolonging the current burn ban due to continued dry conditions. County Judge H.M. Davenport told commissioners that he received an e-mail from Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Meyers, informing him that the index is still considerably high. “Despite the fact that it’s cloudy,” Judge Davenport said, “and some people may think it’s raining somewhere, we are still waiting that opportunity to get some rain.” Davenport added that, normally, July and August are usually hot, dry periods for Navarro County, and rain is usually the result from hurricanes that might hit the coast of Texas, or other abnormal weather systems that come up. He made the motion to leave the burn ban in place with no changes made at the present time, based on the recommendations of Meyers. This item was seconded by Pct. 2 Commissioner Faith Holt, and voted in favor of by the rest of the commissioners. |

Even before “going green” was the thing to do, the folks at Corsicana Cleaners have understood the value of recycling. James Acker, owner, and Mark Acker, manager, began what has become known as the Hanger Program over fifteen years ago. The program encourages customers to bring back their hangers in good condition to the cleaners. For every returned hanger, Corsicana Cleaners makes a donation to the Parks and Recreation department for the city of Corsicana. James Acker estimates that the business has donated an average of $500 per year. Evidence of the success of the recycling program can be found at the entrance to Community Park. The large oak near the park’s sign was the first tree to be planted fifteen years ago from donations received from Corsicana Cleaners. |
