Kerens City Council Meeting (Oct.) PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 October 2007
The Kerens Council was applauded for cleaning up the town during their regular monthly meeting on October 9, 2007. “It is noticeable that someone has been pushing the cleanup of the town. It looks good!” said Marie Brown, a resident of Kerens. “You are not the only one who has recognized the efforts,” Brown replied.

Several nuisance violations were added to the agenda this month to continue to address housing condition issues. Council members unanimously voted to issue Keith Fields and Larry Perry citations for nuisance violations.

The city has started sending out several notices to property owners who are not maintaining their property. Several properties will continue to be inspected over the next few months. Property inspections have been added to the operations portion of the agenda this month. The City Council plans to closely monitor the progress of several homes in Kerens. Three houses are scheduled to be condemned at the next council meeting. A public hearing will be held during the meeting to allow citizen comment on the matter. The Kerens Volunteer Fire Department asked the council if they could recieve money that was allotted to them in last year’s budget to pay for equipment and supply invoices. “You have to understand that a budget does not work that way,” said Mayor Baxter. After discussion between the council members the item was tabled until the fire department can further evaluate their books and find checks issued by the City of Kerens that have not cleared the bank. The council took leads from other Navarro County towns, and passed an ordinance denying Atmos Energy’s proposed rate increase. The Atmos Energy Mid-Tex Division Rate Case is currently topping many agenda’s throughout Texas towns. Atmos Energy is requesting a total annual increase of $51.9 million. This revenue would be generated by an average increase of $1.57 per month on natural gas bills. Approximately 1.5 million customers would be affected by the increase, including Navarro County residents.
