Signs went up recently on the corner of Beaton and Collin Streets in Corsicana, signaling the arrival of the Navarro County Times, a new weekly newspaper owned and operated by Scott W. Marsters, Sr., publisher of the Freestone County Times in Fairfield. Plans to expand The Times franchise have been in the works for over a year, as Marsters brings along Julianne Dodge as editor of the new enterprise. The newspaper, located at 100 N. Beaton, opened for business on May 1, 2007. Although Corsicana currently enjoys a daily newspaper as well as a variety of monthly publications, the Navarro County Times offers its readers a fresh voice and perspective. Emphasizing local stories in Corsicana and surrounding communities, the Navarro County Times will give its readers easy access to the news in each weekly edition. The axiom “News by the people –- for the people” has found a new home in Corsicana. The Times is proud to introduce AJ Narasimhan - Assistant Editor, Angie Coley – Reporter, and David Harness – Contributing Reporter. Check out the pages of The Times for Neil Sperry’s Gardner’s Mailbag, Texas Crossword, as well as local columns by Police Chief G. M. Cox, Navarro County Extension Agents. The Navarro County Times is located in the heart of downtown Corsicana, housed in a building with a rich history. In the early 1900’s, a bank was the original occupant. The ornate ceiling is still visible above the dropped ceiling of The Times new office. Keeping the banking theme alive in the subdivided structure, Leland Cook added teller windows and a bank vault to his suite of offices, which face Collin Street. The building has also been the home of McAdams Pharmacy in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Building owner and pharmacist Douglas “Bud” Coursey ran the Beaton Street Pharmacy there until he sold his business in 2005. As with any new future prize, launching another newspaper will be a challenging adventure for the Navarro County Times. Scott and Julianne are excited to bring the exquisite style and traditions of the Freestone County Times to Corsicana.
