With one election over, it’s time to begin looking to city hall as the filing deadline approaches to run for city council and various other city positions. Potential candidates have until close of business on Monday, March 10, 2008 to turn in applications to their city secretary to run for the May 10th election. In Corsicana, Councilwoman Ruby Williams is seeking a return to Precinct 2, while Dennis Thornberg is challenging Tom Wilson for Precinct 1’s seat. Wilson has served only a few months as councilman, having been appointed to fill the seat following George Walker’s resignation. Dennis is a local Farmer’s Insurance agent, owner of Thornberg Insurance Agency. The office of City Attorney will also be on the ballot, and, as yet, no one has filed. For the City of Blooming Grove, two council seats plus the mayor will be on the May ballot. Mayor Alva Smith and Councilwoman JoMcKee have both filed for re-election. Councilman Ricki Crenshaw had not filed as of Wednesday.
The City of Kerens will have an election to watch. Three council positions are open, including Larry Fields, Jeffery Saunders, and one seat which is vacant. (Carole Cottrell resigned last month.) Neither of the incumbents have yet filed, however, four candidates have turned in applications to be on the ballot, including George Scott, Mooney Holloway, O. R. Spurlock, and Brett Latta. The City of Dawson has also drawn multiple candidates for mayor and three councilmen. Linda Bryant has filed for mayor, while Kay Taylor, Nicole McMahan and Tiny Glen Sullivan have filed for council. However, the incumbents for these positions, Mayor Paula Sears, Debye Woodall, Luann Cornett, and Stephanie Simmons, have yet to file. Two councilmen and mayor will be on the ballot for the City of Frost. Jean Sanders will be running for mayor. Incumbent Mayor Ken Reed had not filed as of Wednesday. The seats currently held Lynn Short and Doyle Staggs are also up for election. Check out the Navarro County Times next week for a complete list of candidates. |
