January 30, 1937 – July 19, 2008 Joan Abel Timmons, 71, of Corsicana, entered Heaven on July 19, 2008. She was born on Jan. 30, 1937, in Holdenville, Okla. to parents, Burl and Chery Abel. She graduated from San Angelo High School and continued her education at Texas Tech University on an academic scholarship. Joan was later named Texas Tech’s outstanding senior woman journalist before she graduated with her bachelor’s degree. During her professional career, Joan was the personal assistant to United States Senator Lloyd Bentsen from 1970 to 1974. She and her then-husband, George Puckett, created Bluebonnet Publishing in 1973, which had several newspapers such as the Hill Country News north of Austin and the Burnet County Bulletin located in Burnet. Joan was the editor of those newspapers. In 1979, Timmons went to work for the Texas Youth Commission as Public Information Officer and then became Chief of Volunteer Services. Upon Joan’s retirement from the state government in the late 90’s, she and Hershel decided to retire in Corsicana. Naturally, Joan did not stay “retired” for very long. Soon, she was the Chairman of the Republican Party in Navarro County. Survivors include her husband, Hershel, of Corsicana; brother, Mike Abel, of San Marcos; daughters, Julie Little and husband Laird, Jill van der Werff and husband Gerard, Jan Nell and husband Mike; Hershel’s sons, Bryan Timmons and wife Karen, Derek Timmons and wife Alva; grandchildren, Willem and Jonah van der Werff, Shelby and Ryan Little, Matthew and Nicole Nell, Christina Hammond and husband Dillon, and Ross, Kailey, Tanner, Jeremy, Kurt and Blake Timmons; great grandchildren, Nina and Leah Hammond. Hershel and family would like to express thanks to Northside Baptist Church and the Navarro County Republican Party for their awesome love and support throughout Joan’s illness. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Lamb officiating. Interment will be noon Wednesday at the Meadow Cemetery in Meadow.
