The Corsicana Visitor's Center holds a true treasure of Navarro County and this great little stretch of Texas. It all began in March of 1974 when the State Bank of Corsicana commissioned an artist from San Antonio to decorate their lobby. Mrs. Catherine King was selected to design amazing depictions of the history of Navarro County and Corsicana using fabric as her medium. Mrs. King had a personal connection to this area, because her husband, Hal, was the great-great-grandnephew of Jose Antonio Navarro. Catherine and Hal King were both present in 1975 for the unveiling of these hand-stitched eight foot by eight foot wall hangings that hung in the three archways of the bank lobby until 2006, when they were donated to the Visitor Center.
Mr. and Mrs. King went around to different areas of Navarro County and Corsicana gathering inspiration for the three scenes, which weaves the histor of the industry, natural resources and business development of the area. With the help of Mrs. Billie Carroll, the locations and pictures of the areas were found and the rest is a stitch in time. The scenes in these paintings are amazing and full of life. The colors range from gold, white, orange, tan and green that really punch up the scenery of the land. These fabric paintings are a real historic value to the things that are going on in present day Corsicana. These hangings are actually hand-stitched with such life that they might be mistaken for real paintings. Stop by and visit the center soon, admire the craftsmanship of these wall hangings and get a real history lesson on Corsicana and Navarro County. It’s well worth the time and effort to see what’s new and to revel in the old. |
