Local merchants were recognized on Thursday, July 31, 2008, for their efforts to keep Corsicana youth safe, healthy, and alcohol free. The ceremony took place at the Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, 120 North 12th Street Corsicana, Texas 75110. Recognition plaques were presented by Mayor C.L. Brown on behalf of the City of Corsicana and IMPACT Corsicana. Area merchants began meeting a year and half ago under the leadership of IMPACT Corsicana’s Mickey Hillock in an effort to work with the community to reduce underage drinking in Corsicana. Since then, Responsible Alcohol Merchants (RAM) has been meeting on a quarterly basis to address the issue of responsible beverage sales, specifically targeting underage drinking regulations from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission (TABC). These efforts have focused on preventative actions to reduce the sale of alcohol to minors in Corsicana. RAM is one of the many outreach activities of IMPACT Corsicana, a community coalition to reduce youth substance abuse. The coalition was formed in fall 2004 by a group of parents, faith-based leaders, youth, city officials, and other local Corsicana citizens to target the problems steadily rising from youth alcohol use. Some of the activities that IMPACT Corsicana has led include passage of city ordinances to reduce youth access to alcohol and tobacco, the Those Who Host Lose the Most educational campaign, and work with local law enforcement officials to increase enforcement of alcohol related laws. IMPACT Communities is an initiative of Drug Prevention Resources, Inc. Merchants recognized for outstanding service to their community include: Brookshire Food Store , Chevron Mart, Chilli’s Restaurant, Corsicana Mini Mart, Corsicana Mini Mart #2, Food Mart, Fiesta Grill Mexican Restaurant, Grab N Go, Harvie’s, HEB Food Store #238, La Michocana Meat Market, Lalani Inc., Mickey’s Exxon, Tiger Tote, Shell – Mini Mart #2, Super Stop, Tiger Tote 102, Wal-Mart, M-Q Food Mart, and 24 Market.
