If you are on the lookout for an excellent meal served with personality then Mom’s Meal Vault is the place you need to be. The friendly service, quaint atmosphere, and down home cooking keeps customers coming back for more.

Dawn O’Brien, the owner of Mom’s Meal Vault, served 13 years as Rice City Secretary before opening the restaurant 16 months ago. “We started with the idea that Rice needed somewhere people could go sit down for a meal,” said O’Brien. When entering Mom’s Meal Vault, you immediately notice the bank teller windows, and the unique atmosphere that invites you to sit down and enjoy a peaceful meal. “The building is full of history,” said O’Brien.

The built-in stand where bank deposit tickets and other documents once sat now houses silverware wrapped in cloth napkins and pictures of Dawn’s two son’s who are currently serving in the Army and stationed in Iraq.

As for the food, everything is made from scratch including mouthwatering desserts, as well as homemade salad dressings and sauces. “I simmered the spaghetti sauce for 6 hours,” said O’Brien. The staff serves each meal with a smile and O’Brien personally banters with many of her customers.

“A bunch of us eat in here together every day,” said Ronnie Compton, who has been a patron of Mom’s Meal Vault since opening. “ The chicken fried steak is tender and thick, and is one of the best around. You don’t have to use a knife to cut it,” added Compton.

James E. Fortson, another loyal customer recalled the history of the building. Fortson used to run the bank that was housed in the building. “I enjoy coming here. She always has good specials,” said Fortson. “I usually get the special, but her chicken fried steak sure is good,” he added.
