Mr. Henson,

Thank you for your interest in our online poll.  As you can see from the picture below, copper thefts are becoming a serious problem in Corsicana.

This sign went up on the rollerskating  arena on Seventh this past  weekend.

The Times first reported  on the growing problem with copper theft on August 23, with an article written by Angie Coley, titled, “Copper Thefts on the Rise.”  With last week’s  front page article by Stephen Farris, “Brazen Robberies Persist,” it is clear that the problem not only continues, but is worsening.   When air conditioners are being vandalized in broad daylight, while the stores are open for business, I think its fair to begin questioning if enough is being done. The thieves are obviously not concerned with being caught.

During a recent Townhall Meeting, Corsicana Police Chief G. M. Cox announced that the City of Corsicana was looking at the way other cities, including Dallas, were handling the issue, including any ordinances they city could pass.  The Texas Legislature recently passed three bills addressing this issue.  One makes the theft of aluminum, bronze or copper a state jail felony. Another recent change in state law requires metal recycling businesses and scrap yards to maintain copies of a seller’s identification as well as written proof of ownership that the metal being sold belongs to the seller.

Can a thief simply produce a false ID and sign any piece of paper?  Of course.  But at least, the process has been made a bit more difficult for them.  Has the Corsicana Police Department been successful in aprehending some of these crooks?  Undoubtedly.

Can more be done?   Of course.  Is enough being done?  Now, that was the question.  Please visit www.navarrocountytimes.com and let us know where you stand on the issue.   Are Police Doing Enough To Stop Copper Thefts In The City?

1. They are doing an excellent job.

2.  Yes, but Scrap Metal dealers should do a better job keeping records of individuals selling copper, and working more with police.

3.  Not enough is being done. More patrols through downtown!

4.  They should hire a night watchman for downtown ... just like the ‘good ‘ol days!’
